How does pipe relining work?

The pipe relining process aims to solve the problem of repairing pipes located underground or in inaccessible locations without requiring extensive excavation. Often referred to as ‘trenchless’ or ‘no-dig’ the process can usually be carried out through nearby access holes, inspection points, and drain entry points removing the need to dig up the pipe. This process is much faster, less invasive, and as a result often cheaper, than traditional dig and replace methods.

Once our plumber has cleared any drain blockages and carried out a complete drain inspection to find the exact location of the crack, break or misalignment, as well as the extent of the problem, the most suitable repair option is decided upon.

A section of flexible liner is chosen to fit the length of the damaged pipe. This liner is then impregnated with an epoxy resin which, once cured in place, will harden creating a tough new pipe inside the original pipe.

The liner is placed on an inflatable packer which is carefully fed along the pipe to the correct position. The packer is then inflated to completely fit inside the broken pipe, sealing up any cracks preventing tree roots or debris from entering and storm or wastewater from leaking out. The resin and liner harden creating a durable new pipe inside the existing pipe.

The relined section of pipe will last as long, or sometimes longer, than if you dug the whole pipe up and replaced it with a new section.
